Writing for the Web: A Gift? Or Smart Research & Hard Work!

First and foremost, let's agree on what the word “gift” means as used in this article. Gift is being used in terms of a quality inherited by birth; As in speed to a cheetah, strength to a lion, or grace to a swan. Can it be said that anyone was endowed with the gift of writing skills at the time of his/her birth? If this is true, wouldn't it also mean that the gifted writers are more apt to write great articles with considerably less work and research done than the not-as-gifted group? The group I most certainly belong to?

How would you know if you're a gifted writer? When it comes to writing - whether it's articles, blogs, eBooks or simply content for my website(s) – do you find that the process is like second nature or do you find yourself brainstorming, as many Web authors do, to come up with suitable material that is unique and can be adequately optimized. Even in the cases when you know what to write about, you also need to know how to write it; And this is the juncture where many of us can get a little (or a lot) frustrated with the Web writing process. The gifted writer, if /she exists may not feel the same frustration.



There are times when actually writing the document can be just as difficult as deciding what to write about. One of the ways I, have found, to solve this problem is to use descriptions and outlines. In fact, tips and outlines when effectively combined can be an excellent tool that can help save you time and reduce a lot of the stress that accompany good Web writing. In other words, once you decide on a topic to write about, start compiling descriptions of items that are relevant to your document and arrange them in a kind of outline that fits the beginning, middle and end of your document.

An outline is defined as a summary of work that is usually composed of headings and subheadings. These headings and subheadings are often categorized as individual paragraphs. The headings and subheadings are used to give you an idea as to what you should write for each paragraph or at least what each paragraph should be about. In a way, an outline is like a written brainstorming session. The only difference is that you would be taking your brainstorming a step further, by building off of the descriptions that you compiled earlier. So far this process has consisted of work and research, not knack or gift.



As it was stated above, descriptions and an outline will save you time. Unfortunately, there are many writers who believe that descriptions in an outline will actually cost them time; But in most cases, this is not the case. An outline can take on average five minutes to fifteen minutes to create once you have descriptions to work with, but you need to remember what you are creating for yourself. Essentially, you are creating a guide to follow. Once you have an outline, you will find yourself just writing, as you have already come up with the ideas needed to write your article. This alone will save you a considerable amount of time as well as help to prevent writers block, which could not only cost you time, but stress as well, unless, of course, you have a special gift for writing.

There is a school of thought that supports the idea of hard work and good research done repeatedly helps to instill talent in the hard worker/researcher by a process known as "practice makes a little more perfect" (an old adage which still holds true) and the more you repeat an action the better you become at performing it. In other words, compiling your descriptions and arranging them in an outline for each and every article, blogs, eBook or content for your website establishes a routine which – after a number of repetitions become almost second nature because you are able to perform the action with such ease. This newly acquired skill may put you in the same category as the one with a gift for writing in which case your gift would have been acquired and not innate.



I suppose that if the gift of writing could be made available in a bottle (like water or wine) that could be purchased and consumed we would all be great writers, but since that is not the case and until we can identify those gifted-at-birth writers, there is one proven method which can be utilized by the rest of use for writing acceptably great articles, blogs, ebooks and/or content for our websites.
