Recently during a telephone conversation I referred a file I wanted to "unzip" after downloading it from the internet. I didn't realize at the time of the unzip reference, that my wife overheard what I said immediately reacted to the statement in a way that gave me the impression that she though i had lost my mind. Unzip what? she asked incredulously; to which I replied, a file from...Once I saw her face I couldn't finish my statement without first explaining what a zipped file was and then proceeded to demonstrate what I meant once she accepted my invitation to a seat next to mine infront of my desktop computer. So I thought it might share that episode here with you.

My wife is not "into computers", to use her words; so the first thing I said to her was, I didn't know all the technical stuff but that a zip file is one that had been reduced in size for easier delivery from one computer (or server) to the other and that one zip file (I didn't go into the .zip extension) can contain several other files which are reduced in size to make them more transportable over the Internet. Although she said "uh, huh, yea I understand", I wasn't convinced that she was so I went a step further and opened my documents folder, selected five or six files and highlighted them to be sent to the zip file but stopped short before actually zipping them up, looked her straight in the eye and said, take a close look these files are about to be zipped up.

Once my wife saw how the zipping process worked and the new zipped file that resulted I knew she had a much better understanding of what it meant to zip up (compress) a file or files and it was a lot easier to then explain what I meant when she overheard my "unzip" reference, but just to be sure I invited her to stay for another minute or two while I unzip or extract the files that I had previously zipped up. Before I could continue my wife finally asked the question I hoped she would ask. In fact, I hoped she would ask any question so I would know that she was really involved in the demonstration and not conjuring up a different image in her mind of something else I might be talking about unzipping. Anyway, she finally asked, how does that happen? What makes the files zip up? Does the computer just do that? This was one of those times when I couldn't wait to give her an answer.

My answer actually took longer that I thought because, although the compressed (zipped) folder tool was delivered with my Vista operating system, I couldn't think of the proper name of the tool right away and had to go looking for the name (have you ever got brain freeze at exactly the wrong time?) before she got impatient and left. WinZip! I blurted out before I even found what I was looking for and didn't need to find anymore. "That's the name of a tool that makes it possible for the computer to complete the procedure", I said to me wife; And I went on to tell her how WinZip is the company that specializes in compressed (zip) technology and is probably the best known and most trusted as the expert in the field of compressed file & folder technology. Lesson learned: When you work from home, close your office door while doing business. You never know who may be lurking nearby. It could be your wife! Otherwise, make sure you zip your lips.
